Home-Start runs family groups for disadvantaged children and young people and their families with complex issues and severe deprivation, to develop and enhance their emotional and intellectual skills. Through attending the groups, the young people put together their own journal with their parents to track their development, and the project also facilitates trips and activities so that families can participate together. A grant of £25,927 from BBC Children in Need funds the salary of a Group Worker as well as running costs.
By taking away the particular barriers to participation in learning and by including parents, the project aims to build parents’ confidence and enable them to support their children in their learning and development in order to give them a more stable home life, stronger emotional and intellectual skills, and opportunities to achieve more at school or employment.
