We believe in supporting the local causes our colleagues get behind, helping to make a difference to your local community. For us, sharing their passion is the ideal way to give something back to the communities that support us. That is why we set up the Asda Foundation, which through a range of projects supports good causes across the UK.

Baronscourt Scout Campsite - £2,680

Omagh

This is a piece of land that was gifted to the scouts, girl guides, Boys Brigade and Girls Brigade. The land was gifted to them by the Duke of Abercorn.

Even though they want to try and bring back the back to basics camping experience they still have to have some modern day equipment including electricity to the portal cabin due to health and safety regulations. The parents have all done tremendous work on the site and now they can be fully operational and bring all the children from the different groups together.

LAC Sensory Garden

Larne

This is a health care centre in the heart of Larne. The outpatients have no outside therapy because they do not have the facilities. As it is in the centre of Larne it will be accessible to the local community and all are welcome – so it will not just benefit the people who attend the centre.

In March 2012 the centre had a break in and had lots of damage so the store fundraised with the help of the local community to help replace/repair the inside of the Health Centre. They raised £14,864. Now they can have a lovely outside area which will help in the treatment of many of their patients.

Scout Group Ireland

Downpatrick

This is a centre in Downpatrick that not only benefits the local scout groups but also another 20 user groups that share the same facilities.

However a lot of the users are from rural areas and have difficulties in attending sessions as transport is rare and costly. The scout group decided they needed to buy a mini bus so to accommodate all local residents that wish to attend these activities and group meetings.

This can be quite costly to run for the local Downs community transport dept are willing to help with maintenance and up keep of the mini bus. The Foundation has agreed to donate £10,000 towards the cost of the mini bus.

Portora Rowing Club

Enniskillen

This facility has been around for over 100 years. It used to be open to just the male population in Enniskillen but in 1994 they opened their doors to female’s and the local schools. The boat yard is also currently home to the Irish Olympic Team.

They only have one changing facility and with the growing numbers wishing to use the boat yard they had to look at fundraising and updating all areas. The Asda Foundation has donated £17,000. They now have all funds in place to get the work they require carried out.

Friday Night Project

Omagh

This group started over a year ago with two sessions: primary school youth club and midnight soccer. It is open to the surrounding and wider communities and has proved so popular that they wish to expand many of the classes that they run. The Asda Foundation donation will help the club buy equipment to allow them to achieve this.

The Sea Shell Project

Kilkeel

This project has so much to offer for the wider community – the facility will offer advice, health service, outreach and parenting classes to the community. The Foundation’s donation of £10,000 will provide outside facilities for children in the community to have a safe place to play.
