£10 million raised to date

Asda has been supporting BBC Children in Need for many years, raising nearly £10 million so far to help change children and young people's lives across the UK. Visit the BBC Children in Need homepage bbc.co.uk/pudsey for further details of this year's appeal.

£9.8 million to "change lots of young lives"

BBC Children in Need has just allocated a further £9.8 million to projects around the UK to help change the lives of disadvantaged children and young people.

The amazing energy given to fundraising for the charity that we see in Asda stores, as well as throughout the country, enables the charity to support a host of projects across the UK.

David Ramsden, Chief Executive of BBC Children in Need said “The amazing generosity of people across the UK means that we have been able to award a further £9.8 million to projects that will change lots of young lives.”

You can read examples below of some of the projects that have recently been allocated money. Many of these have been allocated money as part of BBC Children in Need’s small grant programme. This programme recognises the significant and valuable work that can be done on a grant of up to £10,000 per annum.

North West: One of the newly awarded projects is Nightsafe in Blackburn, who are receiving a grant of £88,691. The grant will help improve the quality of life and aspirations of local homeless young people in Blackburn, by providing safe housing, individual support and accredited life skills training.

Helping children cope with a parent's illness

Our colleagues always do an amazing job for BBC Children in Need – Asda’s 2009 appeal raised an incredible £1.75million, contributing towards a total of £39million for the charity.

We’d like to say a massive thanks to all our colleagues who joined in the fundraising in what turned out to be a record-breaking year!

Earlier this year Lucy Gowans, Asda’s National Charities Partnership Manager, went to visit St Gemma’s Hospice in North Leeds to see how some of that money is being spent. The BBC Children in Need grant enabled St Gemma’s to take on a member of staff specifically to provide support and facilities for children whose parents or carers are being looked after by the hospice.

An update from Pudsey

Changing the lives of children and young people

The money raised for BBC Children in Need last year enabled the charity to reach out and support more children and young people in communities across the UK.

Some of the projects receiving support recently include an equine therapy centre in Flaxley, and Hills Trust Home School Community Project in Glasgow, which helps improve the wellbeing of children affected by severe emotional crisis.

Here are some more examples of projects around the country that have benefited from BBC Children in Need’s support.

The South: Woodland Centre Trust are receiving £53k to help children and young people with special needs take part in outdoor and indoor activities at Camp Mohawk.

Bake the bear in Carlisle

Bake your own spooky Pudsey

Last year, Asda launched the “Bake the Bear” campaign – encouraging customers to use a Pudsey-shaped cookie cutter to make and then sell cookies for BBC Children in Need.

This year, Bake the Bear will be back, with special Halloween Pudsey cookie cutters so customers can make their cookies as part of a spooky party.

We’re hoping to give out one million Pudsey cookie cutters so that this year even more kids can have fun baking Pudsey cookies for a good cause. There will also be a school kit available, including an assembly plan, a teachers’ booklet, posters, a “We baked the bear and raised…” chart, a parents’ letter and money-off coupons for baking products.

Check back here for more information nearer the time.
